When this type of thermometer first came out for healthcare professionals, we tested it's accuracy for several weeks, as compared to esophogeal temp probes (stuck down the throat while intubated for surgery). It is just as accurate as the esophogeals, digitals, both "down below" and oral, and more accurate than a tympanic (ear) thermometer. I was extremely pleased when it came out for the public. My 2 1/2 year old screams bloody murder when we try to take his temp when he's really sick, (he'd play with it if he wasn't sick--big clue to us that he WAS sick)and that was trying under the arm. With this one, he can "help" mommy by holding it with me, and I trust the readings I get with it, since I personally helped test it in the operating room. The only thing, as was true with the tympanic (ear)ones, it is a little expensive, but well worth it just to not fight with the child to take a temp. The tympanics are very easy to use wrong, as you have to pull the earlobe the right way, and anyone who has had or has attempted to take a "down below" temp, we KNOW how that can be, especially waiting for the thermometer to read.
Take the extra money to buy it, it is well worth it!

Comments about Exergen Exergen Comfort Scanner Temporal Artery Thermometer 1ea.:

We just bought this thermometer for our 2 and 5 year old, after they both were running very high fevers & were fighting other thermometers. My 2 year old has a history of febrile illness with her UTIs, and we have struggled with her since 6 weeks old to get temps. I wish I would have known about this two years ago!!

I was surprised & happy that during our 2 ER visits, they were also using the thermometers.
My only tip is to be sure to keep the head of the scanner flat on the surface of the skin, otherwise you will not get an accurate reading. In our own little home study, we consistently got accurate readings...BUT ONLY if we did it properly.

I am going to recommend use of these in my own medical practice (I'm a Public Health Nurse).

Comments about Exergen Exergen Comfort Scanner Temporal Artery Thermometer 1ea.:

I had read some great reviews of this product and have a good friend that swears by it (although he has a different brand). We bought it for our 2 year old that has a history of febrile seizures as we are getting tired of having to always take temperatures rectally (which he enjoys even less than we do!).

He has had a temp for a few days and when first using the product it seemed ok. It tried it on myself and my wife and readings were consistently 98.4 - 98.8 over a couple of hours. I started it on my son and it seemed ok, however later in the day he felt warm and when checking with the Exergen it measured 99.0 across the forehead and then 98.4 behind the ear. I checked a number of times after waiting a couple of minutes and the readings were about the same. I didn't believe it so we checked rectally and wouldn't you know his temp was up to 102.6.

I am returning this today and would not recommend it to anyone unless you child never gets a fever of unless you just want to believe that there temp is normal even when it is not!

Comments about Exergen Exergen Comfort Scanner Temporal Artery Thermometer 1ea.:

I purchased one of these to use on my 2 yr old son. I tried it on several places (forehead, temple and behind the ear). It consistently read almost 5 degrees lower than any other thermometer we have. Stay away from this product! If my son had a tempature 5 degrees higher than this reads it could read a normal tempature when he should be in the hospital! DO NOT TRUST THIS DEVICE!!!

This is very accurate. I have not ever had a misreading on it. I use it on all my boys (ages, 4 years, 23mos and 7mos) much better than the ear thermometer. especially if they have an ear infection.

This is my favorite new product. I had already spent $[...] on the ear one (doesn't work). Had a hard time spending another $[...] on this one (on sale). It was worth every penny. It's easy, it's fast, it's acurrate and it's FAR more comfortable for my child than other methods.

My oral temperature normally runs in the range of 97.8 to 98.4 degrees. I consistently get between a 96.0 and 96.6 with this unit...totally inaccurate. I have read all correspondence and use it according to the instructions.
