Incontinence

Follow these sensible tips to help you deal with the common challenges of incontinence:

Design a safe and easy path to the bathroom.
Keep furniture and area rugs out of the way. Put nightlights in the hallway and bedroom or leave the bathroom light on. If the person you are caring for is confused, try placing brightly colored arrows on the walls or glow-in-the dark tape on the floor to point the way.

Create a comfortable environment.
Men should consider sitting down on the toilet to urinate. This will curb accidents that occur due to inaccurate aim. Provide time and privacy in the bathroom so the person you are caring for feels comfortable enough to completely empty the bladder.

Keys to prevention
A simple walking exercise program or a walker may ease their ability to get to the bathroom in time. Plan regular trips to the bathroom. Gradually increase the interval between trips over several weeks. Make it a goal to go every two hours – about as long as it takes the bladder to fill with one cup of urine.

Consider these products
Using absorbent products may help, especially at night so you both can get some much-needed rest. Also, place a bedpan or commode close to the bed or chair just in case.

What to do after accidents
Remove soiled clothing immediately after an accident. To cut down on odor, rinse items immediately. If you can't rinse fabrics promptly, store them in an airtight container or plastic bag with a room deodorizer placed inside.

Observe and ask questions
If accidents are happening near the toilet, consider a toilet seat extender or wall handrails. If your loved one is taking diuretics, discuss with a doctor when they should be administered if you notice an increase in episodes, especially at night.

If the person you are caring for can't communicate, observe behaviors that indicate urination is about to happen. When in unfamiliar surroundings, scout out the nearest available restroom.

Consult a support group for suggestions from others who have experienced the same problem first-hand.
