Community Affairs

Since our founding in 1901, Walgreens has been committed to building stronger communities.

Walgreens is committed to improving our customers' lives across America. Last year, we gave over $1 million to numerous charities, donating over $250,000 to the treatment and cure of HIV/AIDS alone. Some donations are earmarked for specific fundraising events such as the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, while others are made to research programs or given to areas showing greatest need. Each agency works to cure specific diseases afflicting our customers.

Blow the Whistle on Asthma

More than 25 million Americans are living with chronic lung disease. Every year, close to 361,000 (or one in seven) Americans die of lung disease, making it the nation's number three killer. Walgreens proudly supports the American Lung Association in its mission to prevent lung disease and promote lung health through research, advocacy and education. In the fall of 2003, Walgreens Health Initiatives sponsored several ALA Blow the Whistle on Asthma walks in Illinois to help raise funds for important asthma research and programs. Consumers with questions about lung health can call the ALA's free hotline at 1-800-548-8252. The lines are supported by registered nurses and respiratory therapists.

Historical Foundation

The Walgreen Co. story charts more than 100 years of growth and business leadership, numerous business innovations and thousands of products developed, manufactured and sold by its employees. While the archival of Walgreens achievements was an informal process for much of the company's life, all that changed with the advent of the Walgreen Drug Stores Historical Foundation in the 1980s. Employee Involvement

Across the country, Walgreens has dedicated employees who participate in fundraising events such as Race for the Cure, Relay for Life, and Team in Training. Their enthusiasm is recognized and appreciated by our customers and fellow employees.

At Your Local Walgreens

In addition to the grants donated to individual agencies on behalf of Walgreens employees, Walgreens incorporates the involvement of our customers in our stores. Hope Blooms With You (American Cancer Society-breast cancer research), Take Heart and Give (American Heart Association) and the Buy a Sneaker for a Dollar (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) gives customers the opportunity to donate directly to these worthwhile organizations. These promotions generated over $5.2 million last year.

Social Services

One vehicle Walgreens employs to ensure the social welfare of communities is a strong dedication to the United Way. Last year, Walgreens gave over $1.2 million to various United Way chapters across the country, including Puerto Rico.

Walgreens works towards the betterment of America's youth and disadvantaged populations. Grants are given to numerous organizations across the country that help to operate programs which enable the welfare of children and our aging citizens.

Accomplishing a Future's Worth

Walgreens is dedicated to the education of future pharmacists and store personnel. We proudly encourage those with interest through our personnel recruitment divisions. Over $1 million is given each year to numerous educational institutions across the country.

Our highly successful One-on-One ongoing tutorial programs in inner cities are now up and running in seven inner cities across America. They receive over $400,000 yearly to facilitate their successes.
